Refinishing a Stained, Wooden Door
Peak Pro Painters give the know-how on refinishing a stained, wooden door
A wooden front door can take a lot of abuse from Colorado weather. Sun, snow and rain all cause the finish to deteriorate and wood to fade, crack and wear. We are going to go over the easiest and most effective way to sand and refinish a door!
- The first step is to remove the door from its hinges
- Once its removed from the hinges, place the wooden door on a sturdy flat surface such as two saw horses or a sturdy table
- Remove hardware
- Then, you want to sand off the old finish using an orbital sander. Start with a lower grit sandpaper like a 100 grit and movde to a 120 until the old finish is removed and the wood is smooth and even
- Clean all dust off the wood with a vacuum and a damp rag
- Next, finish the door with UV resistant exterior polyutherane with either a brush or a sprayer. Sand the wood with a 220 grit sandpaper then apply another coat. You can also apply a gloss coat for extra protection
- Finally, put your hardware back on and put the door back on the hinges
