Choosing the Right Brush for Interior Painting

Choosing the right brush for interior painting can feel a lot like buying toothpaste. There are so many options with only slight variations. How do you know which paint brushes you’ll need to get a crisp, clean finish on your interior painting project? In this blog post, our residential painting professionals share their tips and tricks for choosing the right brushes and which brushes to use throughout the painting process.

Tapered Brushes for Trim

A tapered paint brush has an angled edge, which makes it ideal for painting your interior trim. Hold the painting brush with the tallest edge towards the outside of the surface you’re painting. This will help push excess paint towards the inside of the painting space and help you avoid sloppy edges.

Synthetic or Natural Bristles

Choosing the right brush for your interior painting project depends on the type of paint you’ll be using. If you’re going to be using any type of water-based finish you’ll need a brush with synthetic bristles that will not absorb the paint. If you’re using an oil-based paint you can use natural or synthetic bristles. Also consider the thickness of the paint when choosing which bristle is right for the job. A thicker paint requires a stiffer brush. A polyester/nylon brush will be stronger than a 100% nylon brush.

Flat Brushes for Finishing Edges

Switch to a non-tapered or flat brush for painting your interior finishing edges. In a previous blog post we describe in detail the four essential steps to paint a perfect finishing edge. After taping and caulking your line, use a flat brush to apply your final paint stroke along the finishing edge. Make sure to apply a thick layer of paint to ensure coverage. Carefully remove the tape while the paint is still wet and reveal crisp finished interior edges.
